Ir. Yannick Christiaens graduated with a Master's degree in Industrial Sciences in Industrial Design in 2008. After a career in the bicycle industry as a product developer and manager, he returned to Ghent University as a scientific assistant on the Vlaio Tetra project on design for low-volume manufacturing. The research aimed to develop a roadmap, design methodology, and technology database to address the challenges of low-volume manufacturing in a cost-effective way. The methodology was tested in collaboration with various companies participating in the project.

His expertise lies in additive manufacturing for product design, computational design and fabrication, product styling, and form-giving. Currently, he is involved as a project coach and education counsellor in various bachelor’s and master’s courses within the industrial design education programme at Ghent University. His teaching responsibilities include prototyping for industrial designers, lab sessions on industrial manufacturing (desktop CNC, injection moulding, additive manufacturing), product styling and form-giving, computational design using Rhino and Grasshopper, and clay modelling.
