Prof. dr. Francesca Ostuzzi is responsible for the research line on sustainability and system-oriented design within design.nexus, the research group in the field of product development at Ghent University, within the Department of Industrial Systems and Product Design (EA18), Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Her focus areas are sustainability, circular design, open-ended design and system-oriented design.

Francesca Ostuzzi obtained her bachelor's degree in Industrial Design in 2007 and her master's degree in Design & Engineering in 2010, both from Politecnico di Milano. In 2010, she collaborated with Politecnico di Milano and private companies on the development of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and worked as a lecturer in both the Design Department and the Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering Department "Giulio Natta" (CMIC) at Politecnico di Milano.

In 2017, she completed her PhD, titled "Open-ended Design: Explorative Studies on How to Intentionally Support Change by Designing with Imperfection." She is the responsible lecturer for the course "Cybernetics and Systems-Oriented Design."

Currently as professor, she leads research on sustainability in product development, circular design, and system-oriented design. Her research interests include Design Research for Sustainability (R.DfS), Design Education for Sustainability (E.DfS), Open-ended Design (OeD)—exploring the value of out-of-control, undisciplined, error-prone, and wabi-sabi moments in product development and design—as well as new materials and technologies for sustainability and their application in co-generative and open-ended processes.
