Prof. dr. ir. Hendrik Van Landeghem holds a degree of Master of Science in Engineering (Dipl-Ir) in Electromechanics (Ghent University) and a Master of Science in Industrial Management (Ghent University). He obtained his PhD from Ghent University in 1984, based on work performed at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA. He started his career with Procter & Gamble and worked several years in industry as manufacturing consultant and in industrial informatics. He joined the BMT group in 1989, where he became Plant manager of the Sheet Metal division and finally the MIS Group Director.
From 1992 onwards he received tenure at the Ghent University, within the Department of Industrial Management at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, leading to full professorship. Between 2010 and 2014 he was Director of Studies of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University. He was also Director of the Research Group “Human-centered manufacturing systems and robotics” of the Flemish Strategic Research Center Flanders Make from 2014 to 2017. He retired as Emeritus in October 2017 but remains active in teaching professionals in the area of Operations Excellence.
He is Fellow and Board Member of the European Academy of Industrial Management (AIM). Since 2006 he is a Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Science. He is also Fellow of the Flemish Academy of Arts and Sciences of Belgium.
Prof. Van Landeghem is an expert on design and optimisation of manufacturing and logistic systems and their application within industry. He is also an expert in Lean Management, specifically on implementation methods. He has written more than hundred articles on these and related subjects. He wrote or contributed to several books, among them one on "Best Practices in Operations Management" and recently three volumes on "Lean Implementation Methods and Flow Optimisation for SME’s". Since many years, he is also the scientific coordinator and major contributor to the Certification Program "Black Belt in Lean" of the UGAIN academy of Ghent University. As well as a voluntary employee at the Industrial Systems Engineering (ISyE) research group.
