Functional verification of an internal transportation extension in a supplier-OEM relation (2008) using simulation

An OEM of assembled products was preparing the launch of a internal transportation system, where shuttles would collect kits of parts in a warehouse, run by a 3PL, and bring them to the factory lines. Key questions that needed to be verified were:- were the basic calculations and assumptions (such as number of vehicles and part containers needed) valid?- would the overall system work?- how sensitive would the system be under interruptions?A simulation model was built and analyzed under several scenarios. It turned out that the number of loading areas was not sufficient and had to be extended. Also some useful insights as to the scheduling of the transport tours were obtained.
