- Jan Detand was born in 1963. He obtained his MSc. degree in elektromechanical engineering form the University of Ghent in 1986. From 1986 until 1988, he was mechanical designer and project manager at Santens Engineering. From 1988 onwards, Jan became a research assisant at the Catholic University of Leuven and obtained his PhD in 1993 on the subject of "a Computer Aided Process Planning system generating non-linear process plans”. As postdoctoral researcher at KULeuven, he participated in numerous European projects (1993-1996). During this period, he was also visiting lecturer at ITB Bandung, Indonesia in 1993, and at the Universiteit van Stellenbosch, South-Africa in 1996. In 1996, he became assistant professor at the "Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen" (HOWEST) in the domain of "industrial design engineering". In 2013, the department of engineering of HOWEST integrated in the faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Ghent.
Jan Detand's field of research is situated in the domain of industrial design engineering. The research group of industrial design engineering (IDE) is an open research community that focuses on transdisciplinar research through design. IDE utilizes design skills such as design thinking, creativity and prototyping to interact with different stakeholders involved in the transdisciplinary research.
